El Tecolote Beach, La Paz

El Tecolote is the easygoing beach at the end of the Pichilingue road north of La Paz: palapa restaurants on the sand, water sports, views across to Isla Espíritu Santo and no entry limit.

What it's like

Where Balandra is a protected, no-services lagoon, El Tecolote is a proper beach day: a long, gently sloping beach with restaurants such as Palapa Azul serving seafood and cold drinks under palapas. The water is good for swimming, just deeper and choppier than Balandra, especially once the afternoon breeze picks up. Watch for jet skis near the launch areas.

Boats leave from here for Isla Espíritu Santo, and it's the natural backup when Balandra has hit its limit. For the city and whale shark season, see our La Paz guide.

Getting to El Tecolote Beach from Villa 1

About 187 km from Villa 1 via Highway 19 and La Paz, then about 2 km past the Balandra turnoff at the end of the Pichilingue road. Figure on three hours each way from Cabo, or 30 minutes from downtown La Paz.
