The holidays are the most requested weeks of the year, and a Christmas villa rental in Cabo books up long before December. Villa 1 sleeps eight on Médano Beach, with a private pool and a terrace looking across the bay to Land's End. If you want Christmas or New Year's week, the first thing to know is the 7-night minimum; the rest (weather, whales, fireworks, what to book early) follows.

Holiday dates, minimum stays and when to book

Our calendar treats Christmas week and New Year's week as the two peak periods of the year, each with a 7-night minimum at the moment. The live box further down this page shows the current rates and how many holiday nights are still open. Families who come every year often book the next December before they leave, so if you have specific dates in mind, book early.

If the holiday weeks are taken or you want better value, the first half of December is warm, quieter and priced as regular early winter.

Weather in late December

Expect sunny days in the high 70s to low 80s °F and cool evenings in the 60s. The sea is warm enough for most swimmers but cooler than in fall, and the hot tub comes into its own after dark. Rain is rare. See Cabo weather by month for the details.

Whales arrive for the holidays

Humpback whale season in Los Cabos starts around mid-December, and the first whales are often seen from boats in the bay over the holidays. A whale watching tour from the marina is a good activity for mixed ages. Our whale season guide explains the rules and best months.

Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve

In Mexico the big family meal is on Christmas Eve (Nochebuena), late in the evening. Many restaurants run set menus both nights and book out, so reserve early or book a private chef for a dinner at the villa. Chef demand spikes on these dates and holiday surcharges are common.

On New Year's Eve fireworks are usually set off over Cabo San Lucas Bay around midnight, and Médano Beach and the marina fill up. From the villa terrace you look straight over the bay. Expect crowds and loud music in town; a quiet dinner at home and the terrace at midnight is the relaxed way to do it.

Planning a holiday week at Villa 1

A few tips from past holiday guests:

  • Book airport transfers early; the SJD arrivals hall is at its busiest the weekend before Christmas.
  • Order groceries or pre-stocking ahead; supermarkets are packed on December 23 and 24.
  • Book boats, golf and restaurant tables for the week before you fly.
  • Bring or ask about a small tree or decorations if Christmas morning matters to your kids.
  • Use a private chef for Christmas Eve dinner.

Holiday events in town

December in Mexico is full of celebrations, and several are easy to see from Médano. December 12 is the feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe, with processions and mañanitas the night before. From December 16 to 24, neighborhoods hold las posadas, nine nights of processions and parties. Christmas Eve is Nochebuena, the main family celebration; see Christmas in Cabo. Then comes New Year's Eve in Cabo San Lucas, and on January 6, Día de Reyes, when families share rosca de reyes, a sweet bread with a figurine hidden inside.

Kids tend to remember a posada or a slice of rosca long after the pool days blur together. Any bakery in town sells rosca in early January.
