Diving & Snorkelling

Snorkeling in Cabo San Lucas is easy to fit into a beach day, and the diving nearby is some of the best in Mexico. The Sea of Cortez is clear, warm for much of the year and full of fish.

What to know

Snorkeling and Diving in Cabo San Lucas

Cabo sits where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, which Jacques Cousteau famously called “the world's aquarium.” The mix of water and habitat means a lot of life packed into a small area.

Visibility is usually good. Snorkelers see reef fish, sometimes sea turtles, and plenty of color along the rocks. Divers can go deeper to the famous underwater sand falls near Land's End and to a few wrecks.

For a full day out, Cabo Pulmo National Park on the East Cape is worth the drive. It's part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and protects one of the oldest coral reefs on the west coast of North America. Protection there has brought the fish back in a big way: big schools, rays, and sometimes sharks.

You don't need experience to start. Dive shops and tour boats run everything from a first snorkel trip to certified dives, and they'll match the site to your level. From Villa 1, the closest snorkeling is a short boat ride away around the arch, so it's easy to go out in the morning and be back on the beach for lunch.
