Taquería Rossy

Taquería Rossy, which most people just call Tacos Rossy, is a bare-bones seafood taco place on the highway side of San José del Cabo, at the corner of Manuel Doblado and the Transpeninsular. It's where people who live here stop for lunch on the way somewhere, and it's a useful place to know if you're heading to or from the airport, the farms in Ánimas Bajas or the East Cape. It isn't in the historic center, so plan on driving rather than walking over from the plaza.

Start with the fried fish and shrimp tacos, then try the scallop taco and the smoked marlin taco, which is a Baja thing worth trying at least once. If you're hungrier, reviewers also like the breaded sea bass and the fried snapper plates. The best part is the self-serve salsa bar with coleslaw, several salsas and guacamole, so you can dress each taco the way you like. It's cheap, it's air-conditioned (a big deal in August and September), there's a full bar, and they take cards.

What it isn't: charming. It's a big, bright, functional room with plastic chairs, and the draw is the food and the price. If you want a pretty setting, go to Tropicana on the plaza or one of the farm restaurants. Service is quick, so this is a 30-minute stop, not a long lunch.

Don't drive 35 minutes from Villa 1 just for this; Los Claros or Tacos Gardenias in Cabo San Lucas serve the same kind of meal much closer. Rossy makes sense when you're already on the San José side. Our guests usually hit it on the way back from the airport or after an East Cape day, when a round of fish tacos and a cold beer is exactly right. Hours run Monday to Saturday 8 AM to 9 PM and Sunday 8 AM to 8 PM.
