Tourist Corridor, km 16

El Tule Beach

El Tule is a long, open beach at the mouth of an arroyo under the Los Tules highway bridge, with a strong surf break and almost nothing else. It's for surfers, runners and people who want the sand to themselves.

Swimming and surf

El Tule isn't a swimming beach. The break is strong and local guides describe it as best left to expert surfers, with boulders in the surf zone. During Easter week 2026, two people who couldn't get back to shore had to be rescued on separate days.

For experienced surfers it's a worthwhile corridor break on the right swell. For everyone else, it's a place for a long walk or a quiet picnic above the tide line.

Better options nearby

If you want to get in the water, drive back west to Chileno (about 5 minutes) or Santa María. For beginner waves, Acapulquito near San José is the gentle option.

Getting to El Tule Beach from Villa 1

About 18 km east of Villa 1. At km 16.2 by the Puente Los Tules bridge, turn down into the sandy arroyo and follow it to the beach. The sand is soft; a 4x4 or high-clearance car is safer, especially after rain.

What to bring

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get to El Tule beach?

Turn off Highway 1 at km 16.2 by the Los Tules bridge and drive down the sandy arroyo. A 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle helps.

Can you swim at El Tule?

It's not recommended. The surf is powerful with boulders in the break, and rescues happen here. Chileno, a few minutes west, is the safe alternative.
