Our take

Authentic Mexican Flavors at Metate Cabo Restaurant

Metate Cabo Restaurant is on Avenida Crispín Ceseña in El Tezal, and it cooks traditional Mexican food from fresh, local ingredients. The menu leans regional. There are three tlayudas (the Molera comes with black mole and mushrooms), a chile pasilla stuffed with filet mignon, and Michoacano el muchacho, carnitas-style pork with guacamole and chicharrón.

Seafood turns up in less obvious forms. Cochiloco is a fish and shrimp ceviche marinated in pesto, served with two fried quesadillas filled with chamorro. The octopus comes as an aguachile in recado negro, and the Baja taco pairs octopus with pressed pork greaves and beans. For a main, try the picaña with grilled bone marrow or the camarón borracho, shrimp in a Herradura reposado sauce.

Inside, the look is rustic, with handmade Mexican details, and the staff make you feel looked after. On a clear night, ask for a table on the outdoor patio. It's a casual place, no need to dress up. Listed hours are 2:00 PM to midnight on weekdays, and from 9:00 AM on weekends.
