El Navegante at Buenavista Oceanfront Resort

Baja Sur home cooking since 1976 at a family-run beach resort with natural hot springs.

Our take

El Navegante: Family Cooking in Buena Vista

The recipes at El Navegante go back to 1976 and to a cook the Valdez family remembers as Nana Rafaela. It's the restaurant at Buenavista Oceanfront Resort, just south of Los Barriles on the East Cape. Jesús "Chuy" Valdez opened the resort as a 13-room hotel in a former hacienda of General Agustín Olachea, and the second generation of the family runs it today. Executive chef Eduardo Velasco leads the kitchen now.

Expect Baja Sur home cooking and seafood rather than anything experimental. We couldn't find a public menu, so ask what fish came in that day. The resort has natural hot springs on the property, and its two bars, a pool bar and Bar El Pescador, make it easy to turn lunch into an afternoon. Reviews posted on the resort's site talk up the mezcalitas and micheladas.

The restaurant page lists breakfast from 7 AM to 11:30 AM and lunch and dinner from 12:30 PM to 9:30 PM, but the resort's FAQ gives slightly different meal times, so call the reservations line before driving up for a specific meal. The resort sits on more than 20 km of continuous beach, and June to September are the hottest months.

Allow about 1 hour 45 minutes by car from Villa 1, via San José del Cabo and Highway 1 north. It's a good lunch stop on an East Cape loop, especially with kids who'll want the pools, and it's five minutes from Los Barriles if you want to compare with Bay View or Sol y Mar. We wouldn't drive up just for dinner.
