Sol y Mar at Hotel Playa del Sol

Sol y Mar is the restaurant on the second floor of Hotel Playa del Sol, the sister hotel of Palmas de Cortez on the beach in Los Barriles. The terrace looks out over the Sea of Cortez, and it's a more casual, cheaper alternative to Bay View next door. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 1 PM to 9 PM and is closed on Mondays.

Short and seafood-heavy, the menu is exactly what you want here. From the 2025 edition, get the taco gobernador with marlin, the Baja fish tacos, an aguachile and the Baja ceviche. Marlin enchiladas are a local specialty worth trying if you've never had smoked marlin. If you've been fishing, the kitchen will cook your catch three ways with two sides, charged per person.

The hotel calls it the best happy hour in Los Barriles, and while every bar in town probably claims the same, the terrace view does make a strong case. Go in the late afternoon after a day on the water or on the wind, and stay for dinner.

Like everything in Los Barriles (1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours by car from Villa 1), it's a stop on an East Cape day rather than a destination on its own. Pair it with a morning fishing charter out of the hotel, or with the hot springs and beach at Buena Vista five minutes south.
