Our take

Nao: Mediterranean Plates with Baja Seafood

Nao is chef Alex Branch's Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurant on Calle Hidalgo at Manuel Doblado, in the historic center of San José del Cabo. The MICHELIN Guide selected it, and the restaurant says the listing carries into 2026. The room is whitewashed brick with blue accents and a terrace, and the kitchen makes almost everything itself, from the bread to the gelato. It serves breakfast and dinner Monday to Saturday and a long Sunday brunch.

What makes Nao different from the many Mediterranean menus around Los Cabos is the sourcing. The menu names the fishing cooperatives and farms it buys from, including Punta Abreojos and Progreso on the Pacific coast of Baja. From the current dinner menu we'd order the Beirut hummus, the beet salad with labneh and pomegranate molasses, and the cacio e pepe tortellini with blue abalone from the Progreso co-op. The whole grilled fish (800 to 900 grams) is the dish to share, and the braised short rib with saffron rice is the heaviest thing on the menu. MICHELIN also mentions a lechón for sharing.

Prices sit at the upper end for downtown: small plates start around MX$330, mains run about MX$510 to MX$910, and the whole fish is MX$1,650 (all including tax, per the menu). Breakfast is a cheaper way to try it and is a good start to a San José day before the galleries open. Tables are held for 15 minutes, so don't be casual about timing if you're driving in from Cabo San Lucas at rush hour.

Tired of steak-and-lobster dinners? Then Nao is worth the 35 to 40 minutes by car or taxi from Villa 1; the flavors are lighter and the seafood is the best of Baja. One thing to check: the MICHELIN and review listings say it closes on Wednesdays, while the restaurant's own hours page doesn't, so confirm when you book.
