Don Sanchez Restaurant

Don Sanchez is the restaurant people in San José del Cabo send visitors to when they want a dressed-up Mexican dinner without going to a resort. It sits on Boulevard Antonio Mijares, the main street of the historic center, a few minutes on foot from the plaza and the church. From the street it looks small; the real room is a big indoor and outdoor space behind the front, with music every night. It opens for dinner only, from 5 PM to 10 PM.

In the kitchen, chef Edgar Román cooks contemporary Mexican food built on regional seafood, local meat and organic vegetables, and the bar leans hard on wine and agave spirits. From the current menu, the dishes we'd point you to are the Sterling Silver beef brisket (cooked sous-vide for eight hours, finished in the wood oven and served over mushroom rice), the Don Sánchez lobster taco, grilled octopus, and the ancestral mole if you want something rich and slow. The California chile stuffed with lobster is the showpiece. Reviewers also keep mentioning a Caesar salad mixed at the table, which is a nice bit of theater if you have first-timers with you.

This is not a cheap night. Mains on the official menu run roughly MX$450 to MX$1,600, so for a group of eight from the villa it adds up fast. Order a couple of the tiradito plates and the taco to share, then one main each; portions are generous enough. The restaurant belongs to the same group as Edith's in Cabo San Lucas, and has picked up recognition such as Culinaria Mexicana's list of the 250 best restaurants in Mexico (2024). It is not in the MICHELIN selection, so if that matters to you, look at Acre or Flora's Field Kitchen instead.

Is it worth 35 to 40 minutes by car or taxi from Villa 1? Yes, if you make an evening of it: walk the gallery district before dinner, especially on a Thursday during Art Walk season (roughly November to June), then eat late. Book ahead in high season; walk-ins at 7 PM on a Thursday rarely work. If you only have one dinner in San José and want Mexican flavors rather than a farm setting, this is a safe pick.
