Our take

Pitahayas: Mexican Dinner Under the Palapa

Pitahayas has been one of the corridor's classic special-occasion dinners since it opened on May 21, 1995 at Hacienda del Mar in Cabo del Sol. Tables sit under an enormous palapa roof facing the Sea of Cortez. If you remember it from a trip years ago, two things have changed: the resort is now all-inclusive, and the menu has moved from the Pacific Rim fusion it was known for to Mexican gourmet cooking.

Get the guacamole topped with Mexican seeds and grasshoppers (trust us, order it for the table), then the octopus carpaccio with an ant mayonnaise from Oaxaca, and one of the moles: an Oaxacan black mole with short rib, or chargrilled pork belly with a piloncillo and peanut mole. The chargrilled lobster in cured citrus butter is the splurge. Most mains on the menu run MX$635 to MX$875, with the lobster at MX$2,899.

Dinner runs daily from 5 PM to 10:30 PM, and the first hour is Martini Hour, so arrive at 5 for a drink as the light fades. Because Hacienda del Mar is now all-inclusive, it's worth confirming with the restaurant that outside diners are being seated on your date; the resort's own page still links to public OpenTable booking. Next door, De Cortez Grill House is the resort's steakhouse if part of your group wants a straightforward steak.

At 15 to 20 minutes by car from Villa 1, it's a low-effort special dinner. We'd pick it for a birthday or anniversary where the setting matters as much as the food. Ignore the old pitahayas.com website, which hasn't been updated in years; the current menu is on the Hacienda del Mar site.
