Zipper's
Burgers, cold beer and surfers on the right-hander out front, at the San José end of the corridor.
Zipper's: Burgers and Beers at the Costa Azul Break
Zipper's is a palapa beach bar at Costa Azul, on the Tourist Corridor just before you reach San José del Cabo, and it's named after the surf break right in front of it. It has been the default hangout for surfers on this stretch of coast for years. You sit on the sand side, order a beer and watch people ride the waves, which are best from about May to October when southern swells hit this side of the cape.
Expect American-leaning beach bar food with Mexican seafood on the side. Reviewers most often praise the cheeseburger, which is what we'd order, along with the coconut shrimp, fish tacos and camarones a la diabla. Some nights there's live guitar. It's open daily from 8 AM to 10:30 PM, so it also works for a late breakfast after an early surf.
Be realistic about it. Zipper's is loved for its location and history more than its kitchen, reviews are mixed on service, and it gets busy with tour groups and cruise-day visitors. If you're here purely to eat well, there are better meals in San José del Cabo ten minutes away. The water right in front is a surf break, not a swimming beach; if you want to swim, Santa María and Chileno are the calm bays on the corridor.
Stop in if you're in a surf mood, renting boards, or driving back from San José and want a beer with the sunset behind you. It's about 30 minutes along the corridor from Villa 1. Our guests who surf usually pair a session at Costa Azul with lunch here; everyone else tends to prefer a beach bar closer to the villa on Médano Beach.
