What it's like
Las Viudas feels more remote than it is: a series of little coves divided by rocks, with reef close to shore. It's quieter than Santa María next door and has a top A+ Blue Flag rating from the December 2025 review.
The coves face the sea more directly than Santa María, so conditions vary more. Swimmers have been caught by currents here (rescues in 2024 and 2025), and a visitor needed evacuation after a jellyfish sting in June 2026. On a flat day it's lovely; on a swell day, look and move on.
Tips
There's nothing to buy, so bring water, food and shade. The dirt road and small lot fill up on weekends. If the coves look rough, Santa María's sheltered bay is five minutes away, and for lunch head to Mezcal at Montage or COMAL at Chileno Bay.
Getting to Las Viudas Beach from Villa 1
About 12 km east of Villa 1 on Highway 1, 20 to 25 minutes. Turn toward the sea around km 12 before the old Twin Dolphin entrance, then follow the dirt road about 700 m to a small lot. The sand can be deep; an ordinary car usually makes it, but go slowly.
