Why you shouldn't swim here
The beach drops steeply a few steps from the waterline, waves break right on the shore and the backwash pulls hard. Local guides say it's generally not recommended for swimming, and in summer the surf gets big. Hotels along here rely on their pools for a reason.
After heavy rain, the state health agency (COEPRIS) sometimes advises staying out of the sea until test results come back; it did so for several Los Cabos beaches, including this one, in early September 2026. Give it a couple of days after a storm.
What it's good for
It's a long, easy beach walk, with the Estero San José (the freshwater estuary and bird habitat) at the east end. Surf fishermen cast from the sand, and in winter you can often see whales spouting offshore.
To swim, drive ten minutes west to Palmilla, or east to La Playita by the Puerto Los Cabos marina. For more on the town itself, see our San José del Cabo guide.
Getting to Playa Hotelera, San José del Cabo from Villa 1
About 31 km east of Villa 1, 35 to 40 minutes, then along Boulevard Mar de Cortez in the San José hotel zone. There's a public path beside the estuary at the east end and access corridors between hotels.
