Cabo San Lucas vs San José del Cabo: Which Town Suits You?

The two towns of Los Cabos sit at opposite ends of a roughly 20-mile highway and feel very different. Cabo San Lucas is the busy harbor town at Land's End, built around the marina and boat traffic. San José del Cabo is the older municipal seat near the airport, with a colonial plaza, galleries and a slower pace. Plenty of visitors do both. Here is how they compare on the things that shape a trip.

Distance and getting between them

Médano Beach in Cabo San Lucas is about 20 miles from San José del Cabo along Highway 1, the Tourist Corridor. With light traffic it is around 30 minutes; allow 45 at evening rush hour or on busy weekends. Most visitors go by taxi or private driver rather than renting a car, which also avoids parking in San José's small center. Local buses run between the towns too, but for an evening out a driver who waits or returns at an agreed time is far easier, particularly if you plan to drink with dinner.

Vibe

Cabo San Lucas is lively and built around tourism: the marina boardwalk, sportfishing fleets, beach clubs on Médano, and a downtown full of bars and restaurants. It is energetic in the day and loud at night in the center, especially during spring break and holiday weeks.

San José del Cabo feels like a Mexican town that happens to have visitors. The twin-towered mission church on Plaza Mijares dates back to a Jesuit mission founded in 1730, and the streets around it are lined with galleries, shops and courtyard restaurants. Evenings are about dinner and a stroll rather than clubs.

Beaches

This is the clearest difference. Cabo San Lucas has Médano, a long Blue Flag beach inside the bay where swimming is normal, plus boat access to Lover's Beach and El Arco. The beach in front of San José's hotel zone is steep with a strong undertow and is widely considered unsafe for swimming. San José visitors drive to Palmilla or the corridor coves to swim, while the nearby Costa Azul area is known for surfing rather than swimming. See swimmable beaches in Cabo for the full list.

Dining

Cabo San Lucas has the volume: beach restaurants on Médano, seafood and steak on the marina, and long-running downtown favorites such as The Office on the sand and Edith's just above the beach. You can eat well every night without driving.

San José has the destination dining. The historic center has a dense cluster of chef-driven restaurants, and in the foothills just outside town are Flora Farms, a working organic farm with a restaurant, and Acre, which holds a Michelin Green Star. Many visitors staying in Cabo San Lucas plan at least one dinner out there, and reservations at both are recommended.

Art Walk and culture

Every Thursday evening from November to June, San José's Gallery District holds the Art Walk, roughly 5 to 9 p.m., centered on Calle Álvaro Obregón behind the church. Galleries stay open late, some pour drinks, and the streets fill up. It is free and the easiest way to see the town at its best. San José also has the estuary, a freshwater wetland and bird habitat at the edge of the hotel zone, good for an early walk. Cabo San Lucas has no real equivalent; its culture is maritime, centered on the marina and the fishing fleet.

Shopping and everyday errands

Cabo San Lucas has the larger shopping center, Puerto Paraíso on the marina, about a mile from Hacienda Beach Club, plus big supermarkets a few minutes' drive from Médano. Downtown has the souvenir shops, pharmacies and money changers you would expect in a busy resort town. San José's historic center leans toward galleries, silver, ceramics, clothing boutiques and home décor, and it is the better town for buying art or something handmade to take home. Both have large supermarkets on the highway for stocking a villa kitchen, so neither base leaves you short of groceries.

Nightlife

If nightlife matters, Cabo San Lucas wins by a distance. Downtown has big-name bars and clubs such as Cabo Wabo Cantina, plus beach club afternoons on Médano that roll into evening. Our Cabo nightlife guide covers the options. San José's nights are mostly restaurants, wine bars and live music, and they wind down earlier.

Airport and marinas

San José del Cabo is the closer town to Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), about 9 miles away and often under 20 minutes. Cabo San Lucas is about 28 miles, usually 40 to 60 minutes by the toll road, as explained in our airport transfer guide.

Both towns have marinas. Cabo San Lucas marina is the region's main hub for sportfishing, whale watching, snorkeling trips and sunset cruises, most of which depart a short walk from Médano. San José's Puerto Los Cabos marina, a few minutes from the center, is newer and quieter with fewer tour departures.

Verdicts by traveler type

No town is better in general; each is better for a particular kind of trip. Here is how we would choose.

  • Families with kids: Cabo San Lucas, for the swimmable town beach and short boat trips.
  • Groups and celebrations: Cabo San Lucas, for nightlife and restaurants within walking distance.
  • Couples wanting quiet and food: San José del Cabo, with day trips to the Cabo San Lucas side for the arch.
  • Art and culture lovers: San José del Cabo, especially on a Thursday between November and June.
  • Short trips: San José del Cabo cuts the airport drive; Cabo San Lucas puts more activities on your doorstep.
  • Boaters and anglers: Cabo San Lucas, for the marina fleet.

Doing both

Because the towns are only half an hour apart, you don't have to choose one for everything. Many guests stay on Médano for the beach and marina and spend one evening in San José for the Art Walk and dinner, with a driver for the round trip. Villa 1 is set up for exactly that: private beach access on Médano, the marina a short walk away, and a concierge who can arrange a driver for San José. If that plan appeals, check dates for Villa 1.
