Distance and drive time
SJD to Cabo San Lucas is about 48 km (29 mi). Most private transfers use the toll road, which bypasses San José del Cabo's local traffic and joins the highway down the corridor; with a private vehicle the drive is usually around 40 minutes, stretching to an hour at peak arrival times or on holiday weeks.
Médano Beach and Hacienda Beach Club are at the far (Cabo San Lucas) end of that drive, just past the marina. Shared shuttles take longer because they drop at several hotels along the corridor; one airport guide puts them at 45 to 60 minutes.
Clearing immigration and customs
International flights arrive at Terminal 2; Terminal 1 handles domestic flights. After immigration you collect bags and go through customs, where you press a button: green means walk through, red means a short bag inspection. It is random.
Keep your immigration entry record with your passport. Mexico's tourist permit (FMM) is issued at entry, and you need proof of it when you leave. Depending on season, immigration and customs typically take 15 to 45 minutes.
Getting through the 'shark tank'
After customs you walk through an indoor hall that locals call the shark tank. The people in polo shirts at desks and in the corridor are mostly timeshare and tour sellers, not your driver. The usual pitch is a free ride, breakfast or discounted tours in exchange for a "short" presentation that can take most of a day.
Legitimate pre-booked drivers wait outside, past the second set of glass doors, holding signs with guests' names. Salespeople may tell you they cannot help you once you step outside; that is a sales tactic. Keep walking and say "No, gracias, ya tengo transportación" (no thanks, I already have transport).
Private transfer (the easiest option)
A private transfer booked in advance is the simplest way to reach Médano: the driver meets you outside with your name on a sign, loads the bags and takes you straight to the door. Villa 1 offers airport pickup, so guests can arrange it with their booking and send their flight number; the driver tracks the flight if it is delayed.
If you arrange your own, use a licensed company with a federal permit to operate at the airport, and confirm the pickup point and a contact number before you fly.
Uber and ride-hailing at SJD
Uber operates in Los Cabos, but it cannot legally pick up at SJD. Mexico's transport ministry (SICT) treats airports as federal zones where only vehicles with federal permits may load passengers, and National Guard units at the airport have enforced this since 2024, including removing passengers from unauthorised pickups and impounding vehicles.
Some travellers walk off airport property to meet a ride on the highway, but that means roughly 10 to 15 minutes with luggage on a road without a proper sidewalk. It is not worth it. Taking Uber to the airport for your departure is a different matter: drop-offs are widely reported as permitted, though drivers sometimes cancel.
Renting a car
Rental desks are at the airport. You do not need a car to stay on Médano, since the beach, marina and downtown are walkable, but one is useful for day trips to Todos Santos, San José del Cabo or the East Cape.
Mexican law requires third-party liability insurance from a Mexican insurer. Liability cover from US auto policies and credit cards is not accepted, so the rental company will add it at the counter even if an online booking looked cheaper.
