When and where
The Art Walk runs every Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. during the high season, November through June. It is organised by the Gallery District Association and centred on Calle Álvaro Obregón and the surrounding blocks just behind the church and Plaza Mijares, San José's main square. On Thursday evenings Obregón is closed to car traffic.
Entry is free. The streets are busiest between about 6 and 8 p.m.; arrive near 5 p.m. if you want time to talk with gallery owners before the crowds.
What you'll find
Participating galleries range from established Mexican painters and sculptors to glass, ceramics and photography. Among the members listed by the Gallery District are Arte Gallery, Corsica, Desertica, El Armario, Frank Arnold, Galería de Ida Victoria, Ivan Guaderrama, La Sacristía and TWH. Several galleries hold openings or artist appearances on walk nights, and some pour wine.
Most galleries can ship purchased work internationally, so larger pieces don't have to go in your luggage. Ask about shipping and customs paperwork before you buy.
Dinner and the plaza
The walk ends naturally in the restaurants around Plaza Mijares and along the gallery streets, many in restored colonial buildings with courtyard seating. Thursdays are the busiest night of the week in the historic centre during the season, so reserve dinner in advance.
Getting there from Villa 1
San José del Cabo is about 20 miles from Hacienda Beach Club, reached along the Tourist Corridor (Highway 1). Allow 30 to 45 minutes each way depending on traffic; the evening rush toward San José can be slow. Rather than driving and hunting for parking in the centre, most guests book a private driver; the villa concierge can arrange a return time after dinner.
