Flora's Field Kitchen at Flora Farms

Flora Farms is a working organic farm in Ánimas Bajas, in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna just north of San José del Cabo. Gloria and Patrick Greene started it in the late 1990s, and the restaurant, Flora's Field Kitchen, cooks from what grows in the surrounding fields, with meat from the family's nearby ranch that is raised without hormones or antibiotics. The MICHELIN Guide lists it with both a Bib Gourmand and a Green Star, the latter for its sustainability work.

What's on the plate depends on the harvest, with a few long-running classics that never leave. Mama's Pizzeria has a wood-fired oven for Neapolitan-style pies. At the Farm Bar, get the Farmarita, a carrot-based margarita that's the house signature. There's also an ice cream cart and a small grocery selling produce, meat and bread, worth a stop if you're cooking back at the villa. Kids are welcome, and there's room for them to roam the grounds before or after the meal.

It's a proper outing, not a quick dinner: the farm is past San José del Cabo, 40 to 45 minutes by car or taxi from Médano Beach. Book on SevenRooms, especially for dinner, and mind the rules. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead or pay a no-show fee per guest; groups of six or more get an 18% service charge; and arrive more than ten minutes late and your table isn't guaranteed. Getting home is easy, since a taxi stand with set rates sits right next to the farm.
