Tacos Gardenias: Cabo's Favourite Fish Tacos
Tacos Gardenias started in Cabo San Lucas more than 30 years ago with a few plastic tables, a cement floor and a palm-leaf roof. It has since moved to a larger building on Paseo de la Marina, but it is still family-run, using recipes from Doña Olga and her son Guillermo, and the decoration is still kept simple: mounted fish and Los Cabos fishing-tournament posters. The attention is firmly on the food.
The house speciality is the shrimp molcajete, a sizzling stone bowl of shrimp with salsa, onion and cheese. Tacos range from breaded or grilled fish and shrimp to cochinita pibil, nopal (cactus), chicharrón, barbacoa and chicken, and there are ceviches, shrimp cocktails, seafood soup and tortilla soup. There are no chips and salsa; instead, salsas, onions, cabbage and lime are set out for dressing your tacos.
Unlike most taquerías, Gardenias opens at 8 AM and closes at 10 PM, so it works for breakfast, a beach-day lunch or an early dinner. From Hacienda Beach Club it is a short walk inland along Paseo de la Marina, or a very short taxi ride. There is parking on site, and both cash and credit cards are accepted. Expect a queue at peak lunch hours.
