The town and the Hotel California question
Todos Santos sits just above the Tropic of Cancer, between the desert mountains and the Pacific. The center is a few blocks of restored adobe buildings, galleries, craft shops and cafés around the church and plaza. It has about 7,200 residents (2020 census) and a large community of artists and expats.
Everyone asks about the Hotel California. It's a real hotel on the main street, but it isn't the one in the Eagles song; the band sued in 2017 and the case was settled in 2018. Go for the town, not the legend.
Beaches near Todos Santos
The coast here is open Pacific, and most beaches are for watching, walking and surfing, not swimming. Punta Lobos is the fishermen's beach where pangas launch through the surf, La Pastora and San Pedrito are surf breaks, and Cerritos to the south is the most forgiving beach in the area. In winter you can often spot whales from shore.
