Why Médano doesn't get an ocean sunset
Cabo San Lucas sits at the tip of the peninsula, with the Sea of Cortez to the east and the Pacific to the west. Médano Beach curves along the bay, looking toward Land's End. At sunset the sun disappears behind the town and the hills, and what you watch instead is the light on the granite at Land's End and El Arco, which turns gold, then pink, then violet.
That's a good show in its own right, and it's the one our guests see from the villa terrace every evening. But if you've come for the classic sun-into-the-sea shot, plan one evening on the Pacific side.
Sunset times through the year
Baja California Sur doesn't change its clocks, so sunset moves only with the seasons: around 5:40 PM in December and after 7 PM in early summer. Check the exact time for your dates, and plan to be in place 30 to 45 minutes before it. The best color often comes 10 to 15 minutes after the sun is gone.
From a boat around El Arco
The most reliable ocean sunset in Cabo is from the water. Sunset cruises leave the marina, pass Médano, round Land's End and turn slowly on the Pacific side as the sun goes down. Departures are usually around 5 PM in winter and 6 PM in summer. Pick your boat by mood: party catamarans, dinner cruises with live music, or small sailboats for couples. Our sunset cruise guide compares the operators, and a private yacht charter lets you choose the route and the timing.
In winter you may see humpback whales on the way. Bring a light layer; the ride back after dark gets cool.
Cliff-top restaurants on the corridor
Two restaurants on the cliffs a few kilometers up the corridor look back across the water to the Arch, which gives you the sunset and the famous rocks in the same frame.
- [Sunset Monalisa](/restaurants/sunset-monalisa-cabo-san-lucas/) at Km 5.5: terraces stepping down toward the Sea of Cortez, and premium tables closest to the view sold separately. It opens at 5 PM, so the sunset slot is the most requested.
- [Manta at The Cape](/restaurants/manta-the-cape-cabo/) at Km 5: the terrace looks southwest toward the Arch. It's about 10 minutes by taxi from Médano. Book about 45 minutes before sunset.
The Pacific side: sun into the ocean
For an unobstructed ocean sunset on land, you need a Pacific-facing spot. El Farallón at Waldorf Astoria Pedregal is built into the cliffs above the surf; you need a confirmed reservation to enter Pedregal, and it's worth arriving before dark. The Pacific beaches along this side, such as Playa Solmar, are beautiful to watch from but dangerous to swim, so enjoy them from the sand.
Divorce Beach, on the Pacific side of Land's End, faces the open ocean, but it's reached by water taxi, and you need to confirm your return pickup well before dark. Most people see it by day and watch the sunset from a boat instead.
Cerritos and Todos Santos
An hour north on Highway 19, Playa Los Cerritos is a Pacific beach with beach clubs where surfers and families stay to watch the sun go down. It pairs well with an afternoon in Todos Santos. Our Todos Santos day trip and surfing at Cerritos pages have the details. The one catch is the drive back to Cabo in the dark, so have a sober driver or book one.
In winter, the volunteer group near Todos Santos releases hatchling turtles at sunset, roughly December 10 to February 28, so with the right timing you get the sunset and a turtle release on the same beach.
Easy, free sunset spots in town
You don't need a reservation to see a good evening sky in Cabo:
- Médano Beach itself, looking at the rocks as they change color.
- The marina boardwalk, with the boats coming in and the lights coming on.
- A beach club or bar on the sand, such as [The Sand Bar](/restaurants/the-sand-bar-medano-beach-cabo/), which lights torches and bonfires after dark.
- The terrace at [Hacienda Cocina y Cantina](/restaurants/cocina-y-cantina-hacienda-beach-club/), facing Land's End.
Sunset photo tips
For El Arco in the shot, the late-afternoon light from Médano or a boat is the moment, when the rocks turn gold. For silhouettes against an ocean sunset, you need the Pacific side. Phones handle it better if you tap to expose for the sky and hold still; the best color often comes after the sun is gone, so don't pack up early. On a moving boat, brace against something solid and shoot bursts.
Sunset from Villa 1
The easiest sunset spot is the one you don't have to book: the villa's infinity pool and fire bowl, looking straight across the bay at Land's End as the rocks light up.
