How the night is laid out
Evenings usually start with drinks at sunset on Médano or along the marina boardwalk, dinner around 8 or 9 p.m., then the downtown bars and clubs. On weekdays the clubs start filling at about 10:30 to 11 p.m.; on weekends they often do not peak until after midnight.
The main nightlife streets are Boulevard Marina, Lázaro Cárdenas and Vicente Guerrero, a short walk from the marina end of Médano. From Hacienda Beach Club you can walk to all of the venues below without a taxi.
Cabo Wabo Cantina
Sammy Hagar and his Van Halen bandmates opened Cabo Wabo in April 1990, when Cabo still had only a few paved streets. It is a large bar, restaurant and live-music room on Vicente Guerrero at Lázaro Cárdenas, with a house band most nights and Hagar himself playing a handful of shows a year, traditionally around his October birthday.
It is the most music-focused of the big downtown venues and draws a slightly older crowd than the clubs. Its listed hours are 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily.
El Squid Roe
El Squid Roe has been open since the late 1980s and is still family-run by the La Garde family. It has three levels (the top-floor "skybox" was added in 2012), several bars and a kitchen, and it works as a restaurant by day and a dance club at night.
Expect loud music, waiters with tequila, dancing on the tables and a mainly young crowd, especially in March. The bar pours until about 3 a.m.
Mandala and the clubs
Mandala, at Boulevard Marina and Lázaro Cárdenas, is the main club-style venue: DJs, VIP tables and bottle service. It enforces a dress code; caps, hats, swimwear, flip-flops and tank tops are not allowed. Groups that want a table should reserve ahead, particularly on weekends and in spring break.
The marina boardwalk itself has a long line of bars and restaurants with outdoor tables, which is where most people start and where you can have a quieter drink by the boats.
What has closed: the Giggling Marlin
The Giggling Marlin, the Boulevard Marina bar known for its hoist that hung guests upside down like a caught fish, was destroyed by a fire early on June 15, 2024. Reporting in 2025 said it would not reopen and the lot was up for sale. Older guidebooks and maps still list it.
Downtown nightlife has had a harder few years: local reporting in early 2025 described falling sales, and venues such as the Love Shack closed or were damaged. Check that a place is open before you walk over.
Quieter evenings near Médano
Not every night has to end downtown. Beach restaurants along Médano stay open for dinner with tables on or near the sand, and Cocina y Cantina at Hacienda Beach Club is a few steps from Villa 1. The Office on the Beach is known for dinners with your feet in the sand.
For a proper dinner before going out, the marina and downtown have restaurants within a 10 to 15 minute walk.
Safety at night
Downtown Cabo San Lucas at night is busy and heavily policed, but the usual big-night rules matter here.
- Watch your drink and do not accept open drinks from strangers.
- Carry a card and some cash, not everything; leave passports in the villa safe.
- Agree taxi fares before getting in, or use the Uber app in town, where it operates normally.
- Walk back on lit streets and the marina boardwalk rather than along the dark beach.
- Recreational drugs are illegal in Mexico and street sellers are a real risk; say no.
- Tequila shots poured for free still count; pace yourself in the heat.
