Weddings, Honeymoons and Celebrations in Cabo: Using a Villa as Your Base

For a Cabo wedding, vow renewal or big birthday, a villa works best as the base for the couple and closest family: space to get ready, a private pool for the morning after, and a kitchen for a relaxed family dinner. We cover the legal side of marrying in Baja California Sur, the easier symbolic route, when to go, where ceremonies actually happen, and how to plan photos at El Arco.

Legal wedding or symbolic ceremony?

In Mexico only a civil marriage performed by the Registro Civil (civil registry) is legally binding. A religious or officiant-led ceremony on the beach has no legal standing on its own. That leaves two routes, and most destination couples pick the second.

  • Civil ceremony in Mexico: legally valid at home too, but requires paperwork, local blood tests and arriving several days early.
  • Symbolic ceremony in Cabo: you sign the legal paperwork at home before or after the trip, then hold the ceremony you want in Cabo with no Mexican formalities beyond venue permits.

Requirements for a civil wedding in Baja California Sur

Requirements are set by each Mexican state and can change, so confirm them with a local wedding planner or the Registro Civil well before you book flights. As of 2026, planners and the official Los Cabos tourism site describe broadly the same list for foreign couples.

Most couples hire a local wedding planner for a civil ceremony even if the rest of the celebration is simple. Planners know the current registry process, book the lab appointments, arrange certified translators and coordinate with the judge, which matters when you are working in Spanish on a tight timeline. One practical point from the official Los Cabos tourism site: wedding rings carried in their original boxes or packaging can be treated as imported goods at customs, so wear them or carry them unboxed and declare them if asked.

Allow time. Apostilles and certified translations regularly take weeks, and one Los Cabos planner recommends starting at least 10 to 12 weeks ahead. The official registry fees are modest, but having the judge come to a villa, beach or venue costs considerably more than marrying at the registry office.

  • Valid passports for both partners and proof of legal entry to Mexico (your tourist permit or FMM).
  • Original birth certificates, apostilled in the issuing country and translated into Spanish by a certified translator.
  • If either partner was married before, the apostilled and translated divorce decree or death certificate.
  • Blood tests done at a laboratory in Baja California Sur, typically within about 15 days of the wedding; results from home are not accepted.
  • Four witnesses aged 18 or over with valid ID.
  • Arrival at least three to four business days before the ceremony to complete tests and paperwork.

Beach ceremonies and permits

All beaches in Mexico are federal public property, managed locally through ZOFEMAT, the federal maritime zone office. A ceremony with chairs, an arch or décor on the sand normally needs a permit, and planners in Cabo report arranging one on their clients' behalf. The details of cost and paperwork vary, so have your planner or venue handle it.

Because the beach is public, you cannot close it. Expect passers-by and possibly vendors, and pick a quieter time such as early morning or late afternoon. Drones are restricted in many beach areas; check before planning aerial shots.

Venue types

Resort venues are the simplest route because they bundle the permit, chairs, catering and a coordinator. On Médano, Hacienda Beach Club's restaurant, Cocina y Cantina, publishes a dedicated events program with a beach ceremony area for about 40 seated guests, terraces overlooking the bay for up to 100 seated, and smaller spaces such as the Palapa Bar for rehearsal dinners or welcome drinks. Enquiries go through the restaurant's events team.

Inland, farm venues offer a different look. Flora Farms runs its own celebrations program near San José del Cabo, and Acre, also in the Ánimas Bajas foothills, describes itself as a wedding venue as well as a restaurant and hotel. Clifftop and corridor resorts round out the options for larger, formal weddings.

Best months to celebrate

November through April is the most reliable window: dry, warm days, cooler evenings and very little chance of storms, with whales in the bay from roughly mid-December. It is also peak season, so venues, photographers and villas book early. May and June are hotter but still dry.

Hurricane season in the eastern Pacific runs from mid-May to the end of November, and the highest risk for Los Cabos is typically August through October. Summer weddings are possible and cheaper, but buy travel insurance and have an indoor backup. Our best time to visit and weather by month guides go deeper.

Photos at El Arco and Médano

The arch at Land's End is the backdrop everyone wants, and it can only be reached by water. Photographers commonly shoot at sunrise on Médano, when the beach is quiet and the arch sits across the bay, or book a boat so the session includes Lover's Beach with El Arco behind you. Sunset sessions from a boat or a sunset cruise work too. Book the photographer who shoots your wedding for a separate session a day later if you want a relaxed, sand-in-the-dress shoot.

Honeymoons, vow renewals and milestone birthdays

Smaller celebrations are where a villa really works. A private chef dinner by the pool for eight, a morning boat to Lover's Beach, a spa day and a table booked for the group in town cover most milestone trips without needing a venue at all. Our private chef and villa services guide explains how chef bookings work.

Villa 1 sleeps up to eight guests, so it suits the couple and immediate family, a honeymoon, or a small birthday group rather than a wedding party. It is not a large-event venue. If you want to do something at the villa itself, such as a small dinner or a toast on the terrace, ask us and we will tell you honestly what is possible. Open dates are on the Villa 1 booking page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a wedding in Cabo legally valid in the US or Canada?

A civil marriage performed by the Mexican civil registry is generally recognized at home. A symbolic or religious ceremony alone is not legally binding, so many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Cabo.

Do you need a blood test to get married in Cabo?

Yes, for a civil wedding. Both partners take blood tests at a laboratory in Baja California Sur, usually within about 15 days of the ceremony. Tests done at home are not accepted.

Do you need a permit for a beach wedding in Cabo?

A ceremony set up on a public beach normally needs a permit from the local federal maritime zone office (ZOFEMAT). Wedding planners and resort venues usually arrange it for you.

Can Villa 1 host a wedding?

Villa 1 sleeps up to eight guests and is best used as the base for the couple or family. It is not a large-event venue. For anything you would like to do at the villa, contact us and ask.

What is the best month for a Cabo wedding?

November through April offers dry, warm weather with little storm risk. Hurricane season runs mid-May to November, with the highest risk typically August to October.
