Where to Stay in Cabo: Médano, the Corridor, Pedregal, San José or the East Cape

Los Cabos is not one place. It is two towns about 20 miles apart, a resort corridor between them, a cliffside enclave on the Pacific, and a long, quiet coast running north from the airport. Your base decides if you can swim off your own beach, walk to dinner, or hear music at 1 a.m. We compare the five main areas here without the sales pitch, including the one we know best.

The quick answer

For calm water, restaurants on foot and the option of nightlife, stay on Médano Beach in Cabo San Lucas. If you'd rather have a self-contained resort and plan to drive or take taxis everywhere, the Tourist Corridor suits you. Pedregal is for privacy and ocean views, not swimming. San José del Cabo is for a slower, more traditional town with a strong food scene and a short airport run. The East Cape is for people who want to get away from all of it and do not mind dirt roads.

Médano Beach, Cabo San Lucas

Médano is the long beach on Cabo San Lucas Bay, facing Land's End. Because it sits inside the bay on the Sea of Cortez, it is the most reliably swimmable beach in Cabo San Lucas and holds Blue Flag certification. Our Médano Beach guide explains the flags, clubs and water taxis in detail.

The practical advantage is distance. From Hacienda Beach Club at the marina end of the beach, the marina is about 0.9 mi away and the Puerto Paraíso mall about 1 mi, so many evenings need no car at all. Water taxis to El Arco and Lover's Beach leave from the sand. The trade-off is activity: the middle of the beach has big party clubs, jet skis and walking vendors, and downtown bars run late. The marina end is noticeably calmer than the stretch in front of the busiest clubs, but this is not a silent beach.

  • Swimming: yes, in normal conditions; check the flag.
  • Walkability: excellent for the marina, downtown and beach restaurants.
  • Nightlife: on your doorstep, which is good or bad depending on your group.
  • Airport: about 28 mi to SJD, usually 40 to 60 minutes by the toll road.
  • Price tier: mid to upper; beachfront villas and residences cost more than hotel rooms set back from the sand.

The Tourist Corridor

The corridor is the roughly 19-mile stretch of Highway 1 between the two towns, lined with large resorts, gated residential communities and golf courses. Some coves here are among the best swimming and snorkeling spots in the region, notably Chileno Bay and Santa María, and Palmilla near the San José end is also sheltered. Plenty of other corridor beaches face open swell and are not safe for swimming, so check the specific beach before you book.

Almost nothing on the corridor is walkable beyond your own resort. Dinner in town means a taxi or driver, typically 15 to 30 minutes each way depending on where you are. That suits couples who want to stay put, and golfers, since most of the region's championship courses are along this stretch.

  • Swimming: depends entirely on the beach; Chileno, Santa María and Palmilla are the safe bets.
  • Walkability: low; you are in a resort.
  • Nightlife: minimal outside hotel bars.
  • Airport: roughly midway, so shorter than Cabo San Lucas for most resorts.
  • Price tier: upper to top; this is where many of the region's luxury brands are.

Pedregal

Pedregal is the gated hillside community just west of downtown Cabo San Lucas, facing the Pacific. It is known for its private tunnel leading to the resort now operated as the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, and for villas with wide ocean views and sunsets straight over the water.

The Pacific beach below is not a swimming beach; currents and surf there are dangerous, so you swim in pools. You are close to the marina by car but not in walking range for most homes, and the hillside roads are steep. Choose Pedregal for privacy, sunsets and security; don't choose it if daily beach swimming matters.

San José del Cabo

San José is the older, quieter town, about 20 miles from Médano. Its historic center around Plaza Mijares is walkable, with galleries, courtyards and some of the best restaurants in the region nearby, and the Thursday Art Walk runs November to June. It is also the closest base to the airport, about 9 miles away.

The catch is the beach. The hotel-zone beach in front of San José is steep with a strong undertow and is widely described as unsafe for swimming, so you will be driving to Palmilla or the corridor coves for a swim. Nightlife is mostly restaurants and bars that wind down earlier than in Cabo San Lucas. We compare the two towns in detail in Cabo San Lucas vs San José del Cabo.

The East Cape and the Pacific side

North and east of the airport, the coast gets emptier. Resort communities near the airport are paved and easy, but the coastal road beyond them turns to washboard dirt for long stretches on the way to Cabo Pulmo, and some rental companies discourage driving it. This is where to go for diving, fishing, kiteboarding and dark skies, with the understanding that restaurants are sparse and supplies need planning.

On the other side of the peninsula, Todos Santos and the Cerritos surf beach are about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas. They make a great day trip or a separate stay for surfers, but they are a long way from the airport for a short trip.

Who each area suits

Families with young children usually do best somewhere they can swim straight off the beach without a drive, which points to Médano or a corridor resort on Chileno or Santa María; our Cabo with kids guide has more. Groups celebrating want nightlife within walking distance and space to gather, which favors Médano. Couples after quiet should look at the corridor, Pedregal or San José. Food-focused travelers and anyone on a short trip who hates long transfers should look hard at San José.

Villa 1 is on Médano at Hacienda Beach Club, so we are biased, but the reasons are specific: private beach access to a swimmable bay, a view of Land's End from the pool, and the marina a short walk away. If that matches what you want from the trip, you can book Villa 1 direct or read more about the villa itself. If it doesn't, one of the other areas above is probably a better fit, and that is fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best area to stay in Cabo for swimming?

Médano Beach in Cabo San Lucas, or a corridor resort on a protected cove such as Chileno Bay, Santa María or Palmilla. Most Pacific-facing beaches, including those below Pedregal, and the hotel-zone beach in San José del Cabo are not safe for swimming.

Is it better to stay in Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo?

Cabo San Lucas if you want a swimmable town beach, boat trips from the marina and nightlife. San José del Cabo if you prefer a quieter historic town, galleries and a shorter airport transfer, and don't mind driving to swim.

Can you walk anywhere from the Tourist Corridor?

Rarely. Most corridor resorts are self-contained along the highway, so reaching restaurants in either town means a taxi, private driver or rental car.

How far is Médano Beach from the airport?

About 28 miles from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD). By private transfer on the toll road it usually takes 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.
